Google updated its content guidelines October 1, 2026, warning publishers that fabricated author profiles, including those using AI-generated portraits or false qualifications, now constitute a low-quality page signal.

The change, documented in Google‘s “Creating helpful, reliable, people-first content” documentation, directly addresses deceptive author practices that can impact search engine optimization and content strategy globally.

The technology company stated that any form of deception renders a page unreliable for both users and its automated quality systems, according to the updated guidelines. This unreliability directly contributes to a low-quality signal for the content.

Matt G. Southern, reporting for Search Engine Journal, highlighted that this new explicit warning aligns with Google’s existing Search Quality Rater Guidelines, which already classify fake author profiles and unsubstantiated claims of expertise as deceptive practices.

Publishers are now advised to review author pages, bylines, and any displayed qualifications. The company’s guidance emphasizes the necessity for these elements to correspond to real individuals with verifiable expertise.

The move underscores Google’s commitment to promoting trustworthy content and combating misinformation or misleading representations across its search results. Content creators are expected to ensure transparency and authenticity in their author attribution.
