Global industry experts advised businesses to implement essential technical and content strategies to ensure their local web pages are visible and trusted by artificial intelligence systems.
AI systems cannot surface information from local pages they are unable to access, render, or trust, making technical optimization critical for businesses seeking to leverage AI for local search and information retrieval.
Common technical barriers preventing AI crawlers from accessing local page content include restrictive robots.txt files, noindex directives, stringent security settings, and improperly configured sitemaps, according to Darren Shaw, founder of Whitespark.
Shaw also noted that default Cloudflare settings can inadvertently block AI crawlers, highlighting the need for specific adjustments.
Server-side rendering is critical for AI systems, as many newer AI models do not execute JavaScript to index content, unlike Google’s established crawling mechanisms, according to Russ Jeffery, product director at Duda.
Jeffery emphasized that frameworks like Next.js and platforms such as Shopify, Time, and The New York Times utilize server-side rendering, ensuring content is immediately available to crawlers.
Outdated or duplicate pages, often identified by suffixes like ‘-old’, can feed incorrect information to AI systems, necessitating thorough crawl audits to maintain data accuracy, Jake Hundley, a technical SEO specialist, reported.
Hundley stated that such pages can lead AI to present inaccurate or irrelevant information to users, undermining trust and utility.
While the direct impact of schema markup on search ranking remains a subject of debate, it provides significant value for validating and disambiguating structured data for crawlers, Jeffery said.
Schema helps AI systems better understand the context and relationships within a page’s content, even if it does not directly boost a page’s position in search results.
Companies using platforms like WordPress or Wix should ensure their technical configurations do not inadvertently block AI access, as these platforms can sometimes present challenges for advanced crawling.
Optimizing for AI visibility extends beyond traditional SEO, requiring a focus on foundational technical elements that guarantee content accessibility and reliability for evolving AI models.
