Boris Cherny, head of Anthropic‘s Claude Code, stated Tuesday that prompt engineering is of minimal importance for highly capable artificial intelligence models like Claude Code, advocating instead for empirical task assignment and self-verification.
Cherny suggested users seeking to maximize the utility of advanced AI should focus on presenting models with complex, unexpected challenges that include tools for the AI to verify its own output.
He indicated that over-specifying prompts can be counterproductive, advising users to interact with Claude as they would a human colleague, allowing the model autonomy in task execution without excessive instructional detail.
An internal experiment at Anthropic demonstrated Claude Code’s unexpected capabilities when it successfully generated images after being granted access to the OpenCV library, according to Cherny.
Cherny recounted a sophisticated scenario where Claude Tag, functioning as an AI agent, independently rewrote its desktop application from the Electron framework to Swift, meticulously verifying its progress pixel by pixel.
Becoming a proficient user of Claude involves empirical observation, assigning difficult tasks, providing verification mechanisms and iteratively addressing any struggles the model encounters, Cherny explained.
Anthropic, a prominent AI research company, develops large language models including the Claude series.
