AI Overviews are increasingly appearing in Google search results for major brands, raising concerns among U.S. brand teams about narrative control and source citations, according to recent analyses.

The rapid expansion of AI-generated summaries in search engine results pages poses a significant challenge for companies aiming to manage their online presence and direct consumers to official information.

An analysis by Ahrefs found that AI Overviews for 100 global brand names increased from 5 percent on July 1 to 63 percent by September 30. The firm’s broader analysis of 92.5 million branded-keyword crawls showed AI Overviews rose from 61.3 percent in July to 73.3 percent in September.

Chris Long reported on September 30 that 93 out of 100 enterprise brands had AI Overviews. Separately, DemandSphere tracked an increase to 82.06 percent for branded keywords by September 29.

The prominent placement of these AI summaries further amplifies their impact, with 48 of 63 AI Overviews for brand names appearing in the first position on Google’s SERP on September 30.

Brand teams are particularly concerned about the sources cited within these AI Overviews. Between September 16 and 29, Wikipedia was the most frequently cited external domain, appearing in 71.9 percent of AI Overviews for brand names. YouTube was cited in 38.6 percent of cases, and LinkedIn in 22.8 percent.

The analyses indicated that direct competitor-owned websites were rarely cited. Only one verified competitor-owned website was identified among 57 source lists, and just two out of 58 responses directly discussed competitors, according to the research.

Major brands like Walmart, Pepsi, Coca-Cola, Intel, TSMC, and Nvidia are among those potentially affected by the shift toward AI-generated content dominating initial search results.
