French news websites experienced a 20.8 percent decline in total visits between September 2025 and September 2026 after Google introduced its AI Overviews feature, according to an analysis.

An analysis by The Media Leader, based on data from the Alliance pour les chiffres de la presse et des médias (ACPM), reported that total visits for 40 French news brands dropped from 2.14 billion to 1.70 billion during the period.

News websites specifically saw a 22.9 percent reduction in visits, while news applications experienced a 9.4 percent decline, the report said.

Google launched its AI Overviews feature in France on July 22, 2026, which analysts said reduced the necessity for users to click through to publisher sites for information.

François Quairel, a media analyst, noted that the new AI feature provided direct answers within search results, thereby impacting traffic flow to traditional news outlets.

Several prominent French news brands reported decreases in website traffic. Le Parisien’s site saw a 43.5 percent drop, while ici (formerly France Bleu), a Radio France brand, recorded a 55.8 percent decline.

Newsmagazines also suffered losses, with Marianne experiencing a 51.7 percent reduction in visits and Le Point seeing a 51.6 percent decrease, The Media Leader reported.

Some publishers managed to mitigate these declines through various strategies. Ouest-France, for instance, aggregated non-news services on its platform, which helped stabilize its overall traffic figures.

Conversely, Nice-Matin showed an increase in visits, though this was primarily due to changes in its measurement scope rather than organic growth, according to the ACPM data cited by The Media Leader.

The widespread decline is forcing French news organizations to re-evaluate their digital strategies in response to user behavior and the growing influence of artificial intelligence in information dissemination.
