Small businesses globally are adopting agentic commerce protocols, enabling artificial intelligence agents to complete purchases primarily through existing e-commerce platforms without requiring deep technical knowledge.

These open standards, including the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) by OpenAI and Stripe, and the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) by Google and Shopify, allow AI agents such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Perplexity to interact directly with online stores, streamlining the purchasing process for consumers.

Merchants with less than $10 million in gross merchandise volume (GMV) on major small-to-medium business (SMB) platforms generally do not need to review protocol specifications, as their chosen platform handles the underlying technical implementation, industry experts said.

Shopify offers the most extensive integration, with Agentic Storefronts activated by default for eligible U.S. merchants, supporting both ACP and UCP. This allows AI agents to browse products, add items to carts, and complete transactions directly.

Other prominent platforms such as BigCommerce, Wix, and Squarespace support ACP through Stripe’s Agentic Commerce Suite. Merchants on these platforms typically need to enable specific integrations and ensure their product data is well-structured for AI interpretation.

WooCommerce users can implement ACP via the Stripe plugin, though this often requires self-hosted installation and configuration, potentially necessitating assistance from a developer due to its more technical nature.

Businesses using direct Stripe integrations have greater flexibility but must enable Shared Payment Tokens to facilitate agentic transactions. PayPal users may find themselves automatically enrolled in the company’s Agent Ready program, simplifying their entry into agentic commerce.

For merchants not utilizing major e-commerce platforms or direct Stripe/PayPal integrations, adopting agentic commerce requires either migrating to a compatible platform or directly implementing the protocols. Platform migration is often cited as the most cost-effective path for these businesses.

The protocols are designed to allow AI agents to act on behalf of users, searching for products across various retailers like Wayfair and Abercrombie & Fitch and completing purchases autonomously, according to statements from the protocol developers.
