YouTube began implementing new global measures Tuesday to automatically detect and prominently label AI-generated content, making disclosures more visible to viewers.
The video platform will now place AI labels directly below long-form videos and as an overlay on Shorts, moving them from the description panel for improved viewer awareness.
YouTube is introducing automatic detection for photorealistic AI content, applying labels even if creators fail to disclose its use, according to the company.
Creators are still required to manually disclose AI use, and automatic detection supplements, rather than replaces, this existing requirement, YouTube stated.
Labels will be permanent for content created with YouTube’s own AI tools, such as Veo and Dream Screen, or for content containing C2PA metadata indicating full AI generation.
Rene Ritchie, a YouTube spokesperson, said the goal is to provide immediate awareness to viewers, especially since a significant portion of Shorts recommended to new users are AI-generated.
YouTube confirmed that AI labels alone will not directly affect video recommendations or monetization.
However, the platform acknowledged that viewer behavior in response to the labels could indirectly influence content performance.
The move aims to enhance transparency regarding synthetic media on the platform.
