Google implemented significant updates in October 2026, intensifying its efforts against AI-generated spam while introducing new multimodal search capabilities and critical security warnings for web developers.

The changes aim to refine search results by penalizing manipulative content and enhancing the discovery of visual information, according to SEO firm Yoast, which recapped the updates.

Google Search Console now features a multimodal filter specifically for image-based searches, designed to improve understanding of how visual content is discovered, Yoast reported. This development allows site owners to better analyze the performance of their visual assets.

The company is also escalating its detection and penalties for AI-generated spam, including fake personas and content scaled without human oversight or original research, said Carolyn Shelby, an SEO expert.

Alex Moss, another SEO analyst, noted that AI platforms like OpenAI have removed UTM parameters from their outbound links. This change causes traffic originating from these AI sources to appear as direct traffic in Google Analytics, complicating attribution for webmasters.

In e-commerce, Google launched its Universal Cart feature, enabling users to purchase products from multiple merchants directly within Google Search. The functionality is currently live for Shopify users, with potential expansion to other platforms like WooCommerce.

Simultaneously, critical security patches were released for widely used web technologies. PHP addressed the PHP2Shell vulnerability, while WordPress issued version 7.1.3 to fix security flaws, according to Henry, a security researcher. Immediate patching is recommended due to accelerated exploit discovery by AI.

Yoast emphasized that AI crawlers are actively accessing RSS feeds and sitemaps. Webmasters should optimize these resources to ensure maximum discoverability for their content.
