Shopify introduced a new commission structure for AI shopping agents on Thursday, allowing stores to pay developers an additional fee for promoted product placements within the Shop app.

The updated model permits stores to offer extra commissions on top of a standard 0.3 percent base commission, specifically for purchases completed through the Shop app or shop.com, according to company documentation.

This developer preview program is currently limited to active U.S. campaigns and transactions in U.S. dollars.

Shopify requires developers to disclose any promoted products and potential commissions to users, referencing guidelines from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the European Union and the United Kingdom.

The company’s documentation did not explicitly state whether higher commission rates would directly influence product rankings within AI agent recommendations.

The new system raises questions regarding transparency and potential biases in product recommendations generated by AI agents, as stores can financially incentivize the promotion of specific items.

The additional commission is only disbursed when a customer completes a purchase directly within the Shop app or on shop.com, rather than on the individual store’s own website.

Shopify indicated that details of the promoted placements and extra commission structure are subject to change as the program remains in its preview phase.

The e-commerce platform aims to integrate AI more deeply into the shopping experience, leveraging agents to guide consumers through product selections.

Industry observers have noted that such commission-based models could influence the objectivity of AI-driven recommendations, potentially prioritizing revenue generation over optimal consumer choice.

The U.S. FTC and similar regulatory bodies globally have emphasized the importance of clear disclosure for sponsored content and endorsements in digital environments.

Shopify’s move reflects a broader trend among e-commerce platforms to monetize new technologies and integrate advertising models into emerging AI functionalities.
