Snapchat announced July 31 that its Spotlight recommendation algorithms will no longer promote wholly artificial intelligence-generated videos, fulfilling an earlier commitment to prioritize human-created content.
The policy shift aims to address growing user anxiety about AI and aligns with emerging regulatory requirements, particularly in the European Union, regarding the transparent disclosure of AI-generated material.
The company had outlined plans in April to reward authentic human-authored content, a move that now excludes entirely AI-generated videos from eligibility for recommendation on its prominent Spotlight feature.
This change comes as the EU Commission implements AI transparency laws, which mandate clear disclosure when AI is used to create content, influencing how technology platforms manage user-generated media.
A Gallup Poll published in April 2026 revealed that 42 percent of Gen Z individuals experience anxiety related to artificial intelligence. Gen Z constitutes Snapchat’s largest demographic user base.
Initial reactions on X, formerly known as Twitter, generally supported Snapchat’s decision. However, some users raised questions regarding the precise definition of “wholly AI-generated content” under the new guidelines.
The platform’s move reflects a broader industry trend toward emphasizing human creativity and responding to user concerns about the proliferation of AI-generated media across social platforms.
