Google’s John Mueller advised webmasters to prioritize correcting inconsistencies in website metadata to improve search engine optimization and avoid confusing Google‘s indexing systems.
Mueller, a Search Advocate at Google, emphasized that aligning various data sources, such as product availability, simplifies how Google processes and ranks information, making direct correction more effective than attempting to decipher Google’s internal prioritization.
He specifically recommended using a data feed for product availability information instead of relying solely on on-page metadata.
Google does not publish a specific order of priority for reconciling conflicting metadata sources, such as those found in a data feed versus structured data, according to Mueller.
Aligning all sources of product availability, including HTML, the Document Object Model (DOM), and Merchant Center feeds, provides a more reliable approach for webmasters, he said.
Mueller also highlighted the importance of clearly identifying the correct date value when multiple date metadata sources are present, such as on-page content, structured data, and sitemaps.
This clarity helps Google accurately interpret and display temporal information associated with web content.
The advice, shared on the social media platform Bluesky, underscored a long-standing principle in SEO: consistency across all data points is paramount for effective indexing and ranking.
Search Engine Journal reported on Mueller’s recommendations, noting that his guidance aimed to prevent scenarios where conflicting information could lead to suboptimal search results or misinterpretations by Google’s algorithms.
Webmasters often encounter challenges with disparate metadata, particularly on large e-commerce sites or content platforms with frequent updates.
Mueller’s guidance suggests that a proactive approach to data hygiene is more beneficial than attempting to reverse-engineer Google’s internal heuristics for resolving data conflicts.
