Microsoft Clarity introduced new features globally to its AI Citations dashboard on Tuesday, enabling marketers to differentiate between branded and non-branded AI citations and gain insights into AI visibility.
The updates provide granular data on how artificial intelligence systems cite web content, offering competitive analysis and strategic marketing advantages by distinguishing between brand-specific and broader topic-based AI references.
The AI Citations dashboard now includes specific labels for branded and non-branded queries, along with new filtering options and breakdowns of Share of Authority, according to Microsoft.
Branded retrieval refers to instances where AI searches explicitly mention a particular brand, while non-branded retrieval encompasses broader topics or categories, a Microsoft spokesperson said.
Share of Authority is defined as the percentage of citations attributed to a specific domain when compared to other cited domains within particular queries, with calculations performed daily.
The company noted that grounding queries, which are the searches an AI system uses internally to find web content, can differ significantly from the initial prompts entered by users.
Marketers can now separately track citation visibility, AI referral traffic, and overall business results to prevent misrepresenting growth in citations as direct business growth.
Microsoft Clarity is a free tool, but domain verification is required for users to access and view their specific citation data.
The enhancements aim to provide a clearer understanding of how content is being referenced by AI systems, including those from competitors like Google and Bing, which increasingly integrate AI into their search functionalities.
This distinction helps businesses optimize their content strategies for AI-driven search environments and measure the effectiveness of their digital presence.
