Google’s John Mueller cautioned against programmatic SEO on Bluesky on Tuesday, indicating that such practices frequently result in low-quality content and can erode Google‘s trust in a website.

Mueller highlighted that the automated generation of numerous pages, often by combining keywords and attributes, does not inherently improve real utility for internet users and can lead to sites being perceived as spam.

Programmatic SEO involves the automatic creation of a large volume of pages, typically by integrating various keywords, domain names, technologies and specific attributes, according to reports from Search Engine Roundtable.

Google’s systems may lose confidence in a site’s ability to provide value, particularly if it has a history of publishing older, low-quality pages, Mueller said.

Regaining this lost trust from Google’s ranking algorithms is a time-consuming process for website operators.

This situation is comparable to the challenges faced by sites negatively affected by Google’s broad Core Updates or targeted Spam Updates.

Mueller’s warning serves as a general caution, emphasizing the risks associated with mass-generated content that lacks genuine added value for users.

He underscored that such content generation does not inherently improve the real utility offered to individuals searching the internet.

The advice from the Google analyst is not a definitive judgment against all automated content, but rather a strong emphasis on the potential negative consequences of creating content without a clear user benefit.
