Google advised webmasters globally to implement measures preventing website search box functions from being exploited by spammers, which can lead to site quality issues and warnings that a site has been hacked.
The search giant said that if internal search pages generated by spam queries become indexable, they can be interpreted as a security compromise, potentially resulting in warnings displayed within Google Search Console.
Google experts John Mueller and Martin Splitt recently discussed how malicious actors abuse website search features to generate thousands of spammy search result pages, which can significantly degrade a site’s perceived quality if indexed.
According to Google, the company possesses algorithmic capabilities to detect and block many of these spammed search result pages from appearing in its main search results.
To proactively prevent such spam, Google recommends two primary technical approaches: preventing crawling and preventing indexing. Preventing crawling, typically achieved through a robots.txt file, is the preferred method.
Mueller and Splitt emphasized that blocking crawling with robots.txt is more effective because it stops Googlebot from endlessly exploring dynamically generated search pages, especially those created by ‘did you mean’ features.
This approach helps conserve a website’s crawl budget, which is the number of pages Google will crawl on a site within a given timeframe, and reduces unnecessary server load, according to Google.
Conversely, preventing indexing using a ‘noindex’ directive is also a valid strategy, but it still allows Googlebot to crawl the pages, potentially wasting crawl budget and straining server resources.
Infinite crawl spaces can emerge when website search boxes automatically generate numerous pages based on user input or spam queries, creating an endless loop for crawlers.
Google stated that addressing these issues is important for maintaining a healthy online presence and ensuring that legitimate content is prioritized in search rankings.
