Global digital advertisers are increasingly prioritizing lead quality and tangible business outcomes over mere conversion volume in their pay-per-click (PPC) campaigns, according to recent industry observations.

This strategic shift aims to address concerns from sales teams reporting declining lead quality despite campaigns meeting cost-per-acquisition targets, necessitating a redefinition of what constitutes a successful conversion.

To improve lead quality, advertisers must educate ad platforms on the characteristics of a superior lead, moving beyond simple form submissions, industry experts said.

Defining a better conversion involves segmenting leads into distinct stages such as marketing qualified leads (MQL), sales qualified leads (SQL), opportunities, and ultimately, generated revenue.

Effective alignment between marketing and sales departments is important to establish a shared understanding of what ‘better’ signifies and to ensure sales decisions are informed by current lead quality data.

Ad platforms require specific data points, including conversion values or value rules, to accurately differentiate between high-value actions and less impactful engagements.

Integrating real-world qualification and revenue data back into advertising platforms is facilitated by tools like offline conversion imports and Conversions APIs (CAPI).

Microsoft Advertising, for example, supports these advanced data feedback mechanisms to help advertisers refine their targeting and optimization efforts.

Automated bidding systems, which rely on these enhanced signals, necessitate sufficient data and time to optimize effectively, typically requiring a benchmark of at least 30 conversions within a 30-day period for optimal performance.
