Google CEO Sundar Pichai stated Wednesday the company envisions an AI-powered ‘agentic layer’ fundamentally transforming Google Search by unifying user experiences across its product ecosystem.
This strategic shift moves beyond merging individual products, instead focusing on a shared AI infrastructure designed to maintain user context across diverse tasks and applications, according to Pichai.
Google is actively developing a common agent infrastructure intended for both enterprise and consumer applications, utilizing a consistent model, harness, and runtime.
Pichai highlighted that Google’s Gemini AI is engineered to function as a ‘personal, proactive, and powerful assistant,’ with initial features such as chat capabilities and task execution already available to users.
Internal usage data from Gemini indicates a growing trend of ‘agentic’ or task-focused queries from users, a functionality Google plans to integrate broadly into its core Search product, Pichai reported.
The anticipated ‘agentic layer’ aims to deliver a cohesive product experience by enabling AI agents to retain user context as individuals move between different tasks and Google products.
At the recent Google I/O event, the company introduced Google Spark, a cloud-based personal agent designed for web research and integrated with both Search and the Chrome browser.
This integration marks a significant step towards the company’s vision of an AI-driven, unified user experience, Alex Heath reported.
The initiative represents Google’s strategic pivot towards deeply embedding artificial intelligence at the core of its offerings, moving beyond traditional search paradigms.
Pichai emphasized that the goal is to create a seamless interaction where AI proactively assists users across their digital activities rather than requiring them to switch between disparate applications.
