A recent Google binary exposed the internal architecture of Google Maps, revealing 72 ranking signals within its Oyster Rank system and details of its Geostore platform, which aggregates data from 793 providers.
This disclosure offers a comprehensive look into how Google constructs its geographic information and influences local search results, according to an analysis published by RESONEO.
Google’s Geostore system is responsible for building a canonical representation of geographic entities, drawing information from a vast network of 793 distinct data source providers, RESONEO reported.
The Oyster Rank system, an integral part of Google Maps, utilizes 72 specific ranking signals to determine the visibility and prominence of establishments within local search results.
RESONEO emphasized the distinction between a public Google Business Profile listing and Google’s internal canonical entity, known as a Feature, for effective local search engine optimization.
The Geostore architecture includes sophisticated data conflation mechanisms designed to reconcile conflicting information received from multiple sources, which directly impacts how Google incorporates and displays data changes.
RESONEO further stated that it published an archive containing 10,936 Geostore declarations, cross-referenced with the 2024 Google leak, to provide insights into the system’s operations.
These findings highlight the complex data processing and ranking methodologies Google employs to present what it considers the authoritative truth about physical locations to its users.
