Google updated its guidance on Generative AI SEO Tuesday, clarifying that LLMs.txt files and similar markups are acceptable for other services, even though Google Search ignores them.
The change addresses prior ambiguities that had led to community questions regarding the utility and potential impact of such files on search visibility, the company said.
The technology company now states that it is “completely fine” to employ LLMs.txt files and comparable markups for optimizing content for various AI search surfaces.
Previously, Google’s guidance had discouraged the use of these markups, which some interpreted as a blanket prohibition or a signal that their use could negatively affect search engine optimization efforts.
Despite the updated stance, Google Search, including its own generative AI capabilities, does not utilize LLMs.txt files. Consequently, these files will neither enhance nor diminish a website’s visibility or rankings on Google’s search platform, according to the company.
The clarification acknowledges that webmasters and content creators may be optimizing their digital assets for AI search engines and services other than Google’s own offerings.
Google specified that its earlier statement about special markup not being necessary for optimization is exclusively limited to “Google Search (including its generative AI capabilities).” This distinction aims to prevent misinterpretations for those targeting a broader AI ecosystem.
The updated guidance provides a clearer framework for developers and SEO professionals working with AI-driven content discovery.
