Global businesses face an emerging economic risk after Google‘s I/O demonstrations revealed artificial intelligence agents increasingly mediating the entire customer purchase journey from search to action.
The shift, highlighted by features like Universal Cart and agentic booking, suggests AI will manage more transactions, potentially reducing direct website visits and limiting companies’ access to purchase intent data.
Google’s underlying infrastructure for these AI features, including agentic checkout slated for late 2025 and the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), has been under development for months or years, according to the company.
Marketers are expressing concern about competing for AI recommendations rather than traditional clicks, necessitating optimization for signals such as accurate product feeds and detailed content that AI agents can readily process, said Aleyda Solís of Orainti.
Jay Jaffin of WPP Media told Practical Ecommerce that businesses must prioritize readiness, as agentic booking will make a company’s ability to fulfill requests a direct factor in its visibility.
The transition also presents new challenges for measurement, as traditional metrics may not accurately capture agent-mediated interactions, according to Karim Al Chamaa, CEO of Implemnt.
Haroon Qureshi, co-founder of Visor Strategic Advisors, emphasized the need for businesses to adapt their strategies to this changing digital environment.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai showcased the advancements during the I/O conference, underscoring the company’s deepening commitment to integrating AI across its services.
Stripe CEO Patrick Collison previously noted the growing importance of seamless digital transactions, a trend amplified by Google’s new AI capabilities.
Armando Roggio, a senior staff writer for Practical Ecommerce, reported that the move signals a fundamental change in how businesses will connect with consumers online.
Jake Ward, CEO of Mentions, stated that companies must now focus on providing comprehensive and structured data to ensure their offerings are discoverable and actionable by AI agents.
