Google officials confirmed that HTML sitemaps still offer utility for search engine optimization (SEO) by improving user navigation and indirectly assisting content discovery, distinguishing their function from XML sitemaps.

The clarification from Google‘s John Mueller and Martin Splitt emphasized that while HTML sitemaps predate their XML counterparts and were historically used for crawling and PageRank distribution, their current value primarily stems from user experience benefits.

Mueller stated that HTML sitemaps are not a substitute for XML sitemaps, which offer structured data for search engines. Instead, HTML sitemaps serve to make websites easier for human users to navigate, which in turn can signal positive engagement to Google’s algorithms.

The search giant suggested that the SEO value of HTML sitemaps is derived from these user benefits, which Google interprets as positive signals for a website’s overall quality and relevance.

According to Mueller, HTML sitemaps should focus on organizing top-level categories and key sections of a website rather than attempting to list every single page. This approach helps users efficiently find information and explore a site’s structure.

While search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft rely on XML sitemaps for comprehensive page discovery and structural understanding, HTML sitemaps continue to play a role in the broader content discovery ecosystem by facilitating user journeys.

The company indicated that any feature that enhances a user’s ability to find and access content on a website can indirectly contribute to better search engine visibility.
