A major product aggregator website recently experienced a significant Google indexing anomaly, with the search engine failing to index nearly all of its 180,000 pages despite extensive crawling efforts.

This issue highlights Google’s stance against programmatic SEO and content aggregation strategies that generate high volumes of pages with minimal unique value, according to company representatives.

Googlebot, the search engine’s web crawler, explored the affected website 1.17 million times but indexed only four pages, a severe discrepancy for the large online platform. The website’s homepage also remained unindexed, despite repeated crawling attempts.

John Mueller, a Search Advocate at Google, identified two primary issues contributing to the indexing problems. He cited technical malfunctions that caused previously indexed URLs to redirect to the homepage, effectively removing them from search results.

Mueller also pointed to the massive generation of pages through automated content creation, a practice Google generally disfavors. Google’s algorithms are designed to prioritize content that offers substantial added value to users.

The case underscores Google’s consistent position that programmatic SEO, particularly when it results in the creation of numerous low-quality pages, can lead to significant indexing challenges. Such strategies often fail to meet Google’s quality guidelines for search content.

The indexing anomaly serves as a clear indication of Google’s algorithm penalizing websites that rely heavily on automated content generation without sufficient editorial oversight or unique information.
