Google has integrated new experimental Ad Experience metrics into its Chrome User Experience Report (CrUX) to measure how advertising affects real-world user experience, the company announced Tuesday.
The global initiative provides publishers and advertisers with data on ad impact, potentially influencing website ranking and search engine optimization (SEO) strategies in the future, according to Google.
Four new metrics have been introduced: Ad Count, which tracks the number of advertisements; Ad Density, measuring the proportion of screen space occupied by ads; Ad Weight: CPU, assessing the computational resources consumed by ads; and Ad Weight: Network, which evaluates the network bandwidth used by ad content.
CrUX data, often referred to as Field Data, is gathered from opted-in Chrome users across various operating systems including Android, ChromeOS, Linux, MacOS, and Windows.
The new metrics are currently accessible through the CrUX API and CrUX History API, offering historical and real-time data. They are also integrated into the Ad panel within Chrome DevTools.
Google stated that future plans include incorporating these Ad Experience metrics into CrUX BigQuery, which will provide more extensive analytical capabilities for large datasets.
The company indicated that the introduction of these metrics aims to foster a better balance between publisher monetization through advertising and maintaining a positive user experience.
Industry experts suggest that website owners and SEO professionals will need to monitor these new metrics closely, as poor ad experiences could potentially lead to lower search rankings if Google integrates them into its ranking algorithms.
This move follows Google’s ongoing efforts to enhance web performance and user experience, building upon initiatives like Core Web Vitals, which already measure aspects such as loading performance, interactivity, and visual stability.
