ChatGPT has drastically cut its citations of prominent websites including YouTube, Facebook, and Wikipedia, impacting potential brand visibility and traffic for these major platforms, according to a recent analysis published on September 25, 2026.
The share of citations for YouTube in ChatGPT responses dropped by 91 percent compared to August, with similar declines observed for other high-profile domains such as facebook.com, wikipedia.org, and forbes.com, the analysis reported.
David Konitzny, a GEO Researcher at Peec AI, reported that facebook.com’s citation share fell by 88.1 percent, wikipedia.org by 78.4 percent, and forbes.com by 71.7 percent. Konitzny published the analysis on LinkedIn.
The decline represents an absolute reduction in YouTube citations, not merely a dilution across a wider array of sources, Konitzny’s research indicated.
The analysis, based on hundreds of thousands of prompts, distinguished between sources retrieved by ChatGPT and those explicitly cited within its output. These domains may still be consulted by the AI but are not visibly linked, Konitzny noted.
This trend follows earlier reports of reduced social media citations by OpenAI‘s ChatGPT. Reddit’s citation share, for example, dropped by 81 percent around August 14, while YouTube’s share decreased by 88 percent during the same period.
The shift could have significant implications for digital marketing and search engine optimization strategies that rely on AI-generated content for traffic and brand exposure.
Organizations like Peec AI, Petra Labs, Storyboard18, Promptwatch, Meltwater, and Digiday have been monitoring the relationship between AI models and content sourcing.
