ChatGPT conversations now integrate both organic recommendations and paid ad placements, serving distinct functions for user visibility, according to digital marketing experts.
This development requires a new approach for brands seeking to optimize their presence within AI-driven platforms, necessitating specific strategies for both earned and paid visibility.
Ads within ChatGPT operate separately from organic answers, drawing on conversation context and user personalization without directly influencing the AI’s core response, Abhilash Edathil, a digital marketing specialist, said.
OpenAI advises advertisers to utilize its ads manager for testing and outcome-based measurement of these placements, which are available to eligible adults in both Free and Go versions of ChatGPT.
A framework for measuring AI visibility, termed GEO, assesses Presence, Representation, and Competitiveness, according to AJ, a digital marketing strategist.
This framework involves repeatedly posing 20 to 40 customer questions to evaluate a brand’s performance within AI responses, AJ stated.
Prioritizing a brand’s own website for clear, accurate, and consistent information remains important before pursuing AI mentions or external validation, Patrick Algrim of Go Fish Digital reported.
Algrim emphasized that a strong foundational online presence is essential for any subsequent AI visibility efforts.
Traditional last-click attribution models, such as those used in Google Analytics 4 (GA4), may underreport the influence of AI on customer journeys, according to industry analysis.
To counter this, supplementing GA4 data with customer self-reporting and branded traffic trends is recommended to gain a more comprehensive understanding of AI’s impact on brand engagement.
The integration marks an evolving environment for digital advertising and brand strategy, pushing companies to adapt their measurement and optimization tactics for AI environments.
