Brands need to adjust their digital strategy to identify and leverage sources that inform artificial intelligence answers, moving beyond conventional search engine optimization rankings, according to industry experts.
This shift emphasizes understanding how AI models cite information across various industries and search engines, which is important for maintaining brand visibility in a changing digital environment.
Gintare Rimolaityte of the analytics firm Trendos explained that mapping AI answer sources by industry and specific search engine can reveal significant content gaps for brands.
The approach prioritizes understanding citation maps rather than solely relying on traditional search rankings to achieve visibility within AI-generated responses, Rimolaityte said.
Source types contributing to AI answers vary considerably depending on the industry, such as consumer products, IT services, or communication services, and the specific search engine, including Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Gemini.
Brands should prioritize improving their owned content, building a strong presence on review sites like G2, and actively contributing to community discussions on platforms such as Reddit, according to Trendos.
Pursuing editorial coverage based on industry-specific citation patterns also remains a vital strategy for brands seeking to influence AI answers, Rimolaityte stated.
A practical worklist can be developed by analyzing competitor citations for specific customer questions and identifying where a brand is absent from these cited sources.
Video content, particularly in clear question-and-answer formats with accurate transcripts, can also serve as a valuable source for AI answers, the firm reported. Platforms like YouTube can host such content, making it accessible for AI models.
Adapting to AI Search#
The changing nature of search, with AI models increasingly providing direct answers, necessitates a strategic re-evaluation for brands aiming to remain discoverable.
Rimolaityte highlighted that simply ranking high in traditional web search results may not guarantee inclusion or citation in AI-generated summaries or answers.
Brands must therefore invest in understanding the specific data ecosystems that AI models draw upon for their respective industries.
This involves a deeper analysis of where authoritative information is published and consumed, moving beyond keyword-centric SEO.
The shift represents a fundamental change in how brands should approach their content strategy and digital presence, ensuring their information is not only findable but also citable by AI.
