New market entrants are promoting backlink manipulation tactics for “AI visibility,” a strategy that previously incurred significant penalties from search engine giant Google, according to industry observers.
This resurgence of practices, including buying links and over-optimizing anchor text, risks search engine penalties for websites attempting to gain an edge in AI-driven search results, mirroring past search engine optimization errors.
Google’s Penguin algorithm, now integrated into its core ranking system, was specifically designed to identify and penalize various forms of unnatural link manipulation, including excessive volume and artificial link patterns.
Despite a common misconception that Google now disregards spammy links since Penguin became a core component, link-based penalties have reportedly increased over the past year.
Experts warned that purchasing backlinks for perceived AI benefits without a thorough understanding of Google and Bing‘s indexing policies can result in substantial search engine demotions.
The current wave of short-term, spammy search engine optimization tactics is expected to create significant signal noise, which search engines will eventually clear, thereby increasing the value of genuine, high-quality search engine optimization work.
Microsoft Clarity, another major search analytics provider, also considers link quality in its algorithms, indicating a broad industry consensus against manipulative link building.
The digital marketing community has seen these tactics before, with previous attempts to game search algorithms ultimately leading to more sophisticated penalty systems from major search providers.
Analysts suggested that companies seeking improved visibility should focus on creating valuable content and earning organic backlinks rather than resorting to methods known to attract penalties.
