SEO professionals demonstrating artificial intelligence skills can earn a salary premium of up to 27 percent, a benefit often obscured in job descriptions rather than titles.
The median salary for SEO roles explicitly mentioning artificial intelligence in their titles reached $113,625, representing a 27 percent increase over jobs without such a designation, according to a joint report by SalaryGuide.com and Search for Hire. This significant pay differential, based on U.S. market salaries, is largely overlooked because most AI-required roles do not feature the skill in their job titles.
Only 15.5 percent of SEO job postings include artificial intelligence in their titles, while 59.5 percent mention it within the job description, the report indicated. This discrepancy means that approximately 80 percent of roles requiring AI competencies are not identified through title-based searches, according to the analysis.
Jobs that mention AI skills solely within their descriptions offer a median salary of $100,000, a 25 percent premium compared to similar roles without AI mentions, which typically pay $80,000.
The salary premium for AI skills varies significantly by experience level, showing a negative 2.3 percent at entry-level positions. However, this premium escalates with seniority, reaching a median of $35,250 for director-level roles, the study found.
For positions requiring nine or more years of experience, artificial intelligence skills are mentioned in 92 percent of job descriptions. This high prevalence suggests that AI proficiency is increasingly becoming an assumed competency rather than a distinguishing factor for experienced professionals, observed Kevin Indig, a growth advisor at Growth Memo.
Job seekers must optimize their resumes and applications to highlight AI capabilities even when not explicitly requested in the title, advised Josh Peacock of Search for Hire. Hiring managers, conversely, should clearly articulate AI requirements to attract the right talent, Peacock added.
