WordPress launches AI security initiative to counter rising cyber threats

WordPress launched a new security program Tuesday, leveraging artificial intelligence to proactively identify and address vulnerabilities within its core software as cyber threats escalate globally.

The initiative, dubbed ‘The WordPress Core Security Initiative‘, marks a strategic shift towards a more proactive defense posture, moving beyond its traditional reliance on external ecosystem researchers.

The organization described the current environment as a ‘code red moment’, indicating that AI has lowered the barrier for criminals to exploit system weaknesses, according to a statement from WordPress.

The new program is supported by the WordPress core security team, longtime core contributors, and sponsored contributors, aiming to enhance the overall security of the WordPress core software.

The initiative encompasses a three-part process designed to improve security measures, including refining existing release processes and clearing a backlog of security reports that have accumulated.

A key component of the new strategy involves deploying AI to proactively identify potential vulnerabilities before they can be exploited. This represents a significant change in how WordPress approaches security.

Previously, WordPress largely depended on researchers within its extensive ecosystem to discover and report security flaws. The new initiative aims to supplement and strengthen this approach with internal, AI-driven efforts.
