This digital marketing strategy is considered essential for website owners globally due to billions of daily searches, providing a competitive advantage and meeting audience intent through various optimization techniques.
SEO focuses on organic search results, distinguishing it from paid advertising methods such as Search Engine Advertising (SEA) and Pay-Per-Click (PPC).
Search engines utilize a three-step process involving crawling, indexing, and ranking to display the most relevant results for user queries, according to industry experts.
Crawling involves bots discovering new and updated web pages, while indexing adds these pages to a vast database. Ranking then determines the order in which these pages appear in search results based on various algorithms.
SEO encompasses a range of activities, including technical improvements to a website’s infrastructure, optimization of content with relevant keywords, and strategic brand-building efforts.
These efforts are designed to ensure websites not only meet business goals but also effectively address the specific intent of their target audience, said Alex Moss, a digital marketing consultant.
The importance of SEO has grown significantly, with Google alone processing approximately 3.3 billion searches daily in 2024, highlighting the vast potential for organic traffic.
Different specialized forms of SEO exist to meet specific needs, including e-commerce SEO for online stores, local SEO for businesses targeting nearby customers, and video SEO for content hosted on platforms like YouTube.
Despite the emergence of terms like Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) for AI-powered search experiences, the Dutch SEO software company Yoast stated that the term SEO remains sufficient to cover optimization across various discovery platforms.
