Search engine optimization professionals are increasingly focusing on optimizing images for multimodal search to improve content visibility and ranking in contemporary search engines.

Multimodal search allows users to employ diverse inputs, including keywords, images, and voice, or a combination thereof, to retrieve content in various formats, necessitating specialized image optimization strategies.

To ensure images are discoverable within multimodal search environments, they must be both crawlable and indexable by search engines, according to industry guidance.

Google provides tools to assist with this process. The Google Search Console’s ‘Search results’ report, when filtered by ‘Search type: Image’ and ‘Multimodal,’ helps identify how well pages perform in image and multimodal searches.

Manual checks also offer insights into image visibility. Tools such as Google Lens, Circle to Search, or the ‘src:’ operator in Google Images can reveal how effectively images appear in search results, experts said.

Analyzing website log files for Googlebot-Image activity is another important step. This process, alongside using crawling tools like Screaming Frog configured with a ‘Googlebot Image’ user-agent, can pinpoint any blocks preventing images from being crawled.

Technical issues frequently impede image crawling and indexing. Misconfigured robots.txt files, incorrect x-robots headers, or improper use of the <noindex> directive can prevent search engines from accessing and processing image content, according to reports.

Organizations like Google and Screaming Frog provide resources and tools that aid SEOs in diagnosing and resolving these technical barriers, ensuring images contribute effectively to a website’s overall search performance.
