Reddit began testing advertisements within its search results pages with a select group of global advertisers, the company announced in a newsroom post.

The initiative aims to monetize Reddit’s growing search traffic by introducing ads directly into user queries, appearing based on purchase and search intent.

The social media platform stated it would evaluate user response during the test period to refine the experience for users and advertisers.

Ads appearing in search results will use existing ad targeting and contextual relevance mechanisms, according to Reddit.

For example, searches for terms like ‘espresso station’ displayed coffee-related product advertisements, while queries such as ‘home office setup’ showed ads for desks, chairs, or monitors.

Reddit previously expanded keyword targeting capabilities to its Feed in October 2024, further integrating advertising into its core user experience.

In the first quarter, the company also reported that product placements enable in-site shopping directly from search results, indicating a broader strategy to enhance e-commerce functionality.

Chief Operating Officer Jennifer Wong and CEO Steve Huffman have both highlighted search as a significant growth area for the company.

Reddit reported a 30 percent year-over-year increase in Search Weekly Active Uniques (WAUqs), underscoring expanding user engagement with its search function.

The company has not yet disclosed specific details regarding the selection process for advertisers participating in the test, the markets involved, the exact types of ad formats being used, or the pricing models.

Furthermore, Reddit has not provided an anticipated end date for the current testing phase.

Industry observers like Roger Montti, a senior analyst at FotoField, noted that this move aligns with Reddit’s ongoing efforts to diversify its revenue streams.

Brooke Osmundson, a digital marketing expert, suggested the test could provide valuable data on user acceptance of commercial content within search.

This development follows Reddit’s initial public offering earlier this year, as the company continues to seek new avenues for financial growth and profitability.
