SYDNEY — Google warned against manipulating brand mentions to gain visibility in artificial intelligence-generated responses, comparing the tactic to prohibited link-buying schemes that incur penalties.
The tech giant’s stance emerged after an AI software platform reportedly promoted automated brand mention purchases, suggesting they could influence appearances in generative AI outputs from Google, ChatGPT, and Claude.
Gary Illyes, a Google analyst, explicitly likened the acquisition of brand mentions for AI purposes to the practice of buying links, which Google actively detects, ignores, and penalizes, according to statements reported by Search Engine Roundtable.
While Google has not officially confirmed that organic brand mentions directly enhance AI search results, it maintains a firm position against any form of manipulation aimed at influencing these systems.
This cautionary advice is already integrated into Google’s official documentation for optimizing content for generative AI, underscoring the company’s commitment to preventing such tactics.
Industry experts believe that the repercussions for attempting to manipulate AI mentions could be significantly swifter and more severe than previous Google algorithm updates, such as the Penguin update, which targeted link spam.
Barry Schwartz, a prominent voice in the search engine optimization community, suggested that the backlash for manipulating AI mentions would likely manifest much faster than with earlier Google algorithm changes, according to Search Engine Roundtable.
The warning highlights Google’s ongoing efforts to maintain the integrity and relevance of its search results, extending these principles to generative AI.
Google’s policy aims to ensure that AI-generated responses reflect genuine authority and relevance rather than manufactured signals, a principle consistent with its long-standing approach to web spam.
The company continues to develop and refine its detection mechanisms to identify and nullify manipulative practices across its various platforms, including those powered by artificial intelligence.
Analysts like Cherry Sireetorn Prommawin and Kenichi Suzuki have also observed the increasing focus on content quality and genuine engagement in the context of AI, reinforcing Google’s message against manipulation.
