Google expanded its artificial intelligence content verification tools, SynthID and C2PA Content Credentials, to its Search and Chrome platforms Tuesday while also launching a new AI Content Detection API for businesses.
The move aims to address the increasing need for media provenance and detection as AI-generated content becomes more prevalent across digital platforms, according to the company.
SynthID verification, which embeds imperceptible digital watermarks, will now be available in Search and Chrome, allowing users to check the origin of images through features such as Lens, AI Mode and Circle to Search. This technology was previously available within the Gemini app for images, video and audio.
Google is also integrating C2PA Content Credentials, an industry standard for content authenticity, which is rolling out in Gemini today and will extend to Search and Chrome in the coming months.
Laurie Richardson, a Google executive, stated that the expansion represents a significant step in helping users understand whether content they encounter was generated by AI.
A new AI Content Detection API is launching on Google Cloud’s Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform for select partners. This API is designed to detect AI-generated content from Google’s models and other AI systems.
Initial partners for the AI Content Detection API include Shutterstock, Snap, Avid, Fox Sports and Canva. Pushmeet Kohli, a lead researcher at Google, noted that the API provides a critical tool for enterprises seeking to manage and verify content at scale.
Several companies, including OpenAI, Kakao and ElevenLabs, are adopting SynthID technology for their AI-generated content. Google has also open-sourced its text watermarking technology to further promote content transparency.
Meta, a member of the C2PA Steering Committee, announced it would begin labeling camera-captured media with Content Credentials on Instagram, including photos and videos originating from Pixel phones.
