Freelancers globally saw a significant rise in client requests for Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) over the past year, surpassing traditional Google ranking tasks, according to a recent Fiverr survey.
The findings indicate a shifting demand in search marketing services, with a majority of freelancers reporting increased client interest in GEO, alongside growing pressure to lower prices when artificial intelligence is involved in their work.
Sixty-seven percent of Fiverr search freelancers reported an increase in GEO client requests during the last year, compared to 56 percent who saw a rise in Google ranking tasks, the company’s 2026 Holiday Marketing Index, conducted with Censuswide, reported.
Internal Fiverr data showed that GEO services on its marketplace grew by 29 percent between November 2025 and April 2026.
Despite the emerging trend, 61 percent of search specialists surveyed still considered Google SEO the strongest long-term investment. However, the report advised clients to fund both GEO and Google SEO strategies.
The increasing integration of AI into freelance work has also led to pricing pressures. Sixty-one percent of surveyed search specialists noted that clients expected lower prices when AI was involved in the service delivery, with search specialists experiencing the most significant pressure.
The survey, which included freelancers from the U.S., Canada, U.K., France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Australia, also highlighted a shift in client expectations.
Eighty-three percent of search specialists reported that clients were increasingly hiring them for advice and expertise rather than for simple execution of tasks.
The growing interest in GEO aligns with broader industry trends. Forty-three percent of search professionals surveyed in Search Engine Journal‘s State of Search 2027 report indicated plans to invest in or prioritize GEO in the coming year.
