Fabrice Canel, a principal product manager who led web crawling and indexing for Microsoft Bing, retired July 1 after nearly 30 years with the technology giant.
Canel’s departure creates a notable void in Bing’s direct communication with search engine optimization (SEO) professionals and webmasters, a role he frequently filled as a public representative for the search engine.
During his extensive tenure, Canel was instrumental in guiding Bing’s efforts to crawl and index the internet, a foundational aspect of any search engine’s operation. He also became the public face of IndexNow, an open-source protocol designed to allow websites to instantly notify search engines like Bing and Yandex about new or updated content.
His work on IndexNow aimed to accelerate the discovery of web content, a key function for both content creators and search engines. Microsoft said in a statement that the protocol helps search engines keep their indexes fresh and relevant.
As recently as December, Canel co-authored official Bing guidance concerning how duplicate content impacts visibility in AI-powered search results, underscoring his ongoing involvement in search functionalities.
His role extended beyond technical leadership to include significant engagement with the broader webmaster community, offering insights and clarification on Bing’s algorithms and best practices.
The company has not yet announced a successor to lead the crawling and indexing team, nor has it named a new primary contact for webmaster communications following Canel’s retirement. This leaves a temporary gap in official outreach from Bing to the SEO industry, which relies on such communications for adapting strategies.
Canel’s career at Microsoft spanned nearly 30 years, during which he witnessed and contributed to significant evolutions in search technology and web indexing.
