Cloudflare releases EmDash 1.0, challenging WordPress with serverless CMS

Cloudflare announced the release of EmDash Version 1.0, its new content management system designed as a successor to WordPress, on Tuesday after successfully migrating its own high-traffic blog to the platform.

The 1.0 release signifies EmDash’s readiness for real-world deployment, moving beyond earlier preview and beta stages, and positions it as a modern alternative to established CMS platforms.

EmDash is engineered to address vulnerabilities and performance bottlenecks that have historically affected WordPress, according to Cloudflare. The company reported that the system is written entirely in TypeScript, operates serverlessly, and features securely sandboxed plugins running in isolates via Dynamic Workers, powered by Astro.

Cloudflare completed the full migration of its corporate blog to EmDash on Aug. 12, demonstrating its confidence in the system for live production environments. This internal deployment involved handling varied traffic, including spikes from 75 requests per second (RPS) to more than 5,000 RPS.

During testing, the platform also successfully managed a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack reaching 28,000 RPS, Cloudflare reported. The company acknowledged that some issues were discovered on the editing side, particularly with post scheduling, which are expected to be resolved soon.

EmDash initially launched on April 1, with Cloudflare proclaiming it as the “spiritual successor to WordPress.” This claim drew a public reaction from WordPress co-founder Matt Mullenweg.

The successful internal deployment and the impending 1.0 release position EmDash as a more mature content management system, having been tested under high-traffic, real-world conditions.
