Cloudflare announced new Wallets and cloudflare.pay identifiers on August 4, 2026, enabling artificial intelligence agents to make direct payments for web resources globally.

The initiative aims to transform online monetization by allowing AI agents to autonomously pay for services like web pages, datasets, and APIs through a new Monetization Gateway, expanding Cloudflare‘s payment model beyond traditional web crawlers.

The system features a two-tiered wallet structure, Cloudflare said. An Account Wallet will hold funds for human users, while Virtual Wallets will be assigned to AI agents with defined spending limits, including budget caps, authorized services, and maximum transaction amounts.

Payments will utilize stablecoins, with Cloudflare planning to offer funding and conversion options in supported regions. Specific stablecoins, underlying networks, and custody partners have not yet been announced by the company.

Transactions will rely on the x402 protocol, which uses HTTP 402 ‘Payment Required’ and facilitates peer-to-peer micropayments without requiring traditional accounts. This protocol is designed to streamline automated financial interactions.

The x402 project operates under a Linux Foundation structure. Its members include major financial and technology companies such as Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Google, Shopify, and Stripe, indicating broad industry support for the payment standard.

Cloudflare stated that agent identity via cloudflare.pay will be optional. This feature will allow agents to identify their associated organization to merchants, building upon existing Web Bot Auth capabilities.

Full payment functionalities for the new system are expected to roll out in the coming months, Cloudflare reported.
