GLOBAL — Cloudflare announced new AI agent wallets and payment systems Tuesday, enabling artificial intelligence entities to conduct financial transactions and manage identities for accessing online resources.
The initiative, launched August 4, 2026, aims to alter how automated systems interact with web content, addressing challenges in digital monetization and identity attribution for AI agents.
Named ‘Cloudflare Wallets,’ these new financial instruments will allow AI agents to hold stablecoins, while ‘cloudflare.pay’ offers optional identity handles, according to a company statement.
Cloudflare detailed two wallet types: Account Wallets, which are human-owned and hold funds, and Virtual Wallets, which are operated by AI agents via API keys and have delegated spending authority.
Payments processed through this system will settle over x402, leveraging the HTTP status 402 (Payment Required) standard. This standard is supported by a Linux Foundation body that includes major financial and technology firms such as Visa and Google.
The company also noted that its ‘Monetization Gateway,’ which has been on a waitlist since July 1, 2026, will facilitate charges for any asset protected by Cloudflare, including web pages, datasets, APIs, and managed computing platform (MCP) tools.
Businesses will have the option to require AI agents to declare their identity, allowing them to prioritize transactions with known agents or enforce specific identification requirements.
This system is designed to resolve issues in traditional web business models, such as attributing free trials or discounts to AI agents that previously lacked stable or verifiable identities, Cloudflare said.
The company indicated that the new payment and identity framework will provide a more structured and accountable environment for AI agents operating across the internet.
