WASHINGTON – North American publishers experienced a significant decline in the share of page views originating from search engines during the third quarter of 2026, according to a new report from digital analytics firm Chartbeat.

Search engines accounted for 12 percent of all page views at North American publishers in Chartbeat’s network in Q3 2026, a substantial drop from 21 percent recorded in the same period of 2025, raising concerns about content discovery in the age of artificial intelligence.

The 9 percentage point decrease in North America’s search share year-over-year saw 5 of those points lost between Q3 and Q4 2025 alone, Chartbeat reported.

Globally, 9 out of 10 regions tracked by Chartbeat experienced a decrease in search engine page view share.

Central Asia saw the most dramatic decline, with its search share falling from 53 percent in Q3 2025 to 33 percent in Q3 2026.

Africa was the sole region to record an increase, with its search share rising from 41 percent to 46 percent over the same period, according to the report.

Earlier Chartbeat reports from Q4 2025 and Q1 2026 had already indicated that the growing impact of artificial intelligence on search and content discovery was a likely cause for the observed declines.

The analytics firm suggested that AI-powered search results from platforms like Google and Bing could be reducing the direct traffic publishers receive from traditional search engine referrals.

Publishers are increasingly concerned about how AI models summarize information or answer queries directly, potentially bypassing the need for users to click through to original source articles.

The shift represents a challenge for publishers reliant on search engine optimization (SEO) strategies to drive audience traffic and advertising revenue.

Chartbeat’s latest findings highlight a potential long-term trend impacting the digital publishing industry as AI technologies continue to evolve.
