Brands must strategically monitor and correct AI-generated content mentioning their products to maintain reputation and accuracy, according to expert advice released globally.
Constance Tan, a product marketer at Ahrefs, emphasized that companies should identify recurring patterns in AI mentions across the customer journey rather than reacting to isolated instances. This proactive approach aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how AI tools like ChatGPT are perceiving and disseminating information about brands.
Monitoring efforts should be structured around three core areas: customer problems, competitive positioning and comparisons, and factual information about the business, Tan said. This framework helps brands categorize and prioritize the types of AI mentions that require attention.
Investigating competitor mentions is also important, according to Tan. Brands should track the sources and formats of these mentions, including online reviews, discussions on platforms like Reddit and Quora, and video content, to discern the underlying reasons for AI recommendations.
Correcting inaccuracies should begin with a brand’s owned channels, ensuring that all proprietary information is current and correct. Subsequently, brands should pursue corrections from frequently cited and reachable third-party sources that AI models often reference.
If direct outreach for corrections proves unfeasible, brands are advised to create new, comprehensive, and up-to-date sources of information. This strategy ensures that accurate data is available for AI models to access and cite in future responses.
Community participation should focus on providing genuine value, such as answering technical questions or correcting factual errors, rather than directly pitching products, Tan reported. This approach fosters trust and positions the brand as an authoritative source.
Technical barriers can hinder AI bots from accessing information, leading to missing citations. These issues include firewall restrictions, broken URLs, and content reliant on JavaScript, which can prevent bots from effectively crawling and indexing data.
Visibility reporting should always be interpreted within a broader business context. Tan stated that impressions and share of voice metrics should be considered alongside conversion rates and customer attribution to provide a complete picture of AI’s impact on brand performance.
