Artificial intelligence assistants are altering how local businesses achieve online visibility, prioritizing consistent digital information and customer reviews for optimal search results in North America.
This shift necessitates that businesses adapt their online presence management to meet the new demands of AI models, which now interpret a broader range of signals than traditional search engines.
AI assistants, including platforms like ChatGPT, Grok, Copilot, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and Gemini, analyze local business signals such as name, address, phone number, operating hours, customer reviews, and mentions across various online sources, according to industry data.
Inconsistent business information across platforms such as Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect, and Bing Places can prevent a business from appearing in AI-generated responses, experts reported.
AI models typically cite an average of six to 27 domains per response, with an overall average of 12, underscoring the need for data consistency across numerous online sources.
Customer reviews now provide context beyond simple star ratings, as AI systems analyze mentions of specific products, service quality, atmosphere, and recent customer visits, according to data providers.
This detailed analysis allows AI to offer more nuanced recommendations to users seeking local services and products.
Companies like Uberall and AthenaHQ offer data and tools specifically designed to help businesses manage their listings, reputation, and overall AI visibility, leveraging overlapping datasets to provide comprehensive solutions.
The transition from traditional map pack results to AI assistant responses marks a significant change in local search, requiring businesses to prioritize a holistic approach to their digital footprint.
