Generative artificial intelligence and AI Overviews are fundamentally transforming business-to-business marketing by shifting the buyer journey and demanding new strategies for vendor visibility, industry experts said Tuesday.
The emergence of AI Overviews, which often present summarized information directly in search results, is prioritizing AI citations over traditional website traffic volume, necessitating a strategic shift for B2B vendors globally.
Generative AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity have absorbed the early research phase of the B2B buying journey, meaning prospective buyers now form shortlists of vendors before ever visiting a company’s website, according to research by Expert Callers.
Brands that were cited within AI Overviews saw a 120 percent increase in organic clicks per impression, while brands not cited experienced a 67 percent decrease in click-through rates, Seer Interactive, a digital marketing agency, reported.
Approximately 80 percent of the B2B buying journey now occurs without any direct vendor involvement, with buyers often arriving at near-final procurement decisions before engaging with sales teams, Forrester research indicated.
Credibility signals have become important for AI models to surface vendors in their summaries, including case studies, third-party citations, and verified reviews, digital marketing analysts said.
A new AI search strategy involves a thorough audit of a company’s online presence, optimizing existing case studies for AI readability, and securing bylines and reviews in trusted industry sources, Seer Interactive reported.
Tools such as Google Search Console, Ahrefs, and SEMrush are being utilized by marketers to analyze how their content is performing and being cited by AI models.
The shift means that simply generating high volumes of website traffic is no longer sufficient for B2B lead generation; instead, vendors must focus on becoming a trusted source that AI models will cite.
Companies are now tasked with ensuring their expertise and offerings are presented in a format that AI can easily interpret and reference, thereby influencing buyer decisions much earlier in the sales funnel.
