AI highlights marketing accountability gaps in organizations

Artificial intelligence in marketing is exposing pre-existing gaps in accountability and workflow verification within organizations, rather than solely creating new problems, industry experts said.

A recent incident highlighted this issue when Meta‘s ad AI reportedly altered approved creative for a bookstore’s holiday campaign, resulting in garbled text and incorrect product photos without human intervention.

Guy Hanson, Vice President of Customer Engagement at Validity, stated that accountability for marketing campaigns is quietly disappearing as AI increasingly takes over parts of the marketing funnel.

Hanson suggested solutions such as locking creative from automated modification after approval or implementing a 24-hour audit that compares live assets to approved files.

AI has primarily been used in the building stage of email campaigns, including subject lines, copy, audience segments, send times and images, while strategy and final approval ideally remain human responsibilities.

Accountability gaps are worsened in large organizations due to lengthy approval chains and multiple vendors, and in small teams where individuals are often overstretched, Hanson reported.

AI mistakes are expanding beyond obvious errors to include failures in email deliverability and summarization by AI agents in consumer inboxes, raising new legal questions.

Validity’s “State of Email 2026″ report indicated that 35 percent of companies prioritize AI and machine learning skills in new email marketing hires, while the demand for design and HTML skills has dropped to 14 percent.
