YouTube clarified three specific content categories on Tuesday that can lead to a channel being disqualified from its Partner Program (YPP), providing creators with clearer monetization guidelines.

The global video platform outlined these categories — Generic/Repetitive, Off-putting Content, and AI Personas in Sensitive Topics — to enhance transparency for creators seeking to monetize their channels.

Matt Halprin, Vice President of Trust and Safety at YouTube, explained these distinctions in a recent Creator Insider video. Halprin stated that these categories do not represent a change in underlying policy but rather a more defined explanation of existing rules.

The Generic/Repetitive content category encompasses videos such as templated productions, image slideshows with minimal narrative, and AI-generated videos created from generic templates, according to YouTube.

Off-putting content includes videos designed to be emotionally manipulative or shock-driven. Examples cited by YouTube include exaggerated portrayals of animal distress or fabricated celebrity deaths and disasters.

The third category, AI Personas in Sensitive Topics, specifically targets channels that utilize AI-generated individuals to deliver information on sensitive subjects. These topics include health, legal, financial or political issues.

YouTube indicated that content falling into these newly clarified categories will not be eligible for monetization through the YPP. However, the platform confirmed that such videos can remain on YouTube provided they adhere to the company’s broader community guidelines.
