WordPress released version 7.0, codenamed ‘Armstrong,’ on Tuesday, introducing significant updates focused on user experience, design control, security enhancements, and new artificial intelligence capabilities for its content management system.

The update aims to provide both users and developers with greater command over website aesthetics and functionality, alongside improvements to core CMS features and overall platform security, according to WordPress.

A notable refresh to the administrative experience includes a new ‘Modern’ admin theme. This theme overhauls user interface elements such as headers, the Customizer, and the color scheme picker, improving visual consistency and ease of use.

Navigation within the admin area has been enhanced with ‘View Transitions,’ designed to create smoother visual shifts between different sections. Additionally, a new ‘Command Palette‘ icon, accessible via Cmd+K or Ctrl+K, offers faster access to various tools and settings.

Site owners can now manage fonts directly from the dashboard through a dedicated ‘Font Library Management Screen,’ which facilitates uploading, installing, and organizing typefaces.

The editor experience has been improved with ‘Visual Revisions,’ allowing users to visually compare two versions of a revision using a slider and a document inspector that summarizes changes made to content.

WordPress 7.0 provides greater control over mobile navigation. Users can now customize hamburger menu overlays using blocks and patterns, offering more flexibility in responsive design.

Responsive editing features are more deeply integrated, enabling editors to control block visibility across different device types and expanding breakpoint control options.

New design tools include dedicated blocks for Heading, Icons, and Breadcrumbs. Gallery blocks now support lightbox functionality, and Navigation Link blocks can utilize dynamic URLs.

Expanded layout and typography controls have been introduced, supporting text indentation, text columns, width and height controls, dimension presets, and aspect ratios for more precise design adjustments.

Users can now apply block-level custom CSS, allowing for more targeted styling of individual blocks within the editor.

Security enhancements in WordPress 7.0 include the removal of Administrator and Editor roles from the default user registration selector. Site Health alerts will notify users if these roles were previously selected.

While AI integration represents a significant new feature, WordPress also highlighted the importance of other updates, including improved design capabilities and strengthened security measures.
