LONDON – Britain’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) imposed new conduct requirements on Google, mandating fair ranking criteria and data portability for its search services.
The move aims to increase transparency and accountability for Google’s dominant search engine, including its AI Overviews, under the UK’s new digital markets competition regime.
Under the new rules, Google must rank organic search results, including AI Overviews, using objective and non-discriminatory criteria, explicitly excluding sponsored results from these considerations, the CMA stated.
Google is also required to provide advance notice of any significant changes to its ranking algorithms. Furthermore, the company must establish a formal process for businesses to raise concerns about search result fairness.
A key component of the new mandate is the UK Data Portability API, which facilitates users’ ability to share their search data. This API is now a legal obligation for Google.
Will Hayter, a senior official at the CMA, emphasized that these measures are designed to ensure Google operates more transparently and fairly within the digital marketplace, according to Press Gazette.
Google has been given six months to implement the fair ranking requirements. The data portability obligation carries a shorter deadline, with Google expected to comply within three months.
These new requirements are enacted under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act, which established the UK’s framework for regulating powerful digital firms.
The CMA’s action represents a significant step in the United Kingdom’s efforts to curb the market power of large technology companies and foster greater competition and consumer choice in digital services.
