Google’s John Mueller provided insights for SEO professionals regarding Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) optimization and URL impression counts within AI Overviews.
Mueller highlighted that misidentifying the true LCP element can lead to inefficient performance improvements, while also confirming specific conditions under which URLs in AI Overviews register as impressions.
During discussions, Mueller referenced a study by Nuvemshop, an e-commerce platform, which demonstrated how customized page layouts could inadvertently cause browsers to measure an incorrect LCP element. This often results in optimization efforts being directed at the wrong part of a webpage, he said.
The Nuvemshop study specifically identified that CSS transitions applied to carousels delayed the detection of the intended LCP element. Consequently, the browser incorrectly identified a banner located lower on the page as the actual LCP, according to Mueller.
Mueller stressed the importance of verifying what the browser genuinely identifies as the LCP element, rather than relying solely on assumptions about page structure. He indicated that optimizing based on an incorrect LCP measurement can waste resources and yield minimal real-world performance gains, he said.
Separately, Mueller addressed questions concerning how Google’s AI Overviews impact URL impression metrics. He confirmed that URLs initially hidden behind a “See more” tab within an AI Overview do not count as impressions.
An impression for such a URL is only registered if a user actively clicks on the “See more” tab to reveal and interact with the hidden content, Mueller stated. This clarification is significant for understanding the true reach and visibility metrics of content within the search environment.
Ann Smarty, writing for Search Engine Journal, reported on these updates, noting their importance for SEO strategies on platforms like X. The insights offer a clearer understanding of how to approach Core Web Vitals optimization and interpret performance data from Google Search.
