ANAHEIM, California — Reddit announced a strategic shift from solely ad revenue and artificial intelligence deals to prioritize user engagement and community building during its latest earnings call.

The social media platform aims to significantly expand its daily active user base in the United States by converting existing weekly users into more frequent participants, signaling a broader commitment to long-term organic growth over short-term monetization.

Reddit seeks to double its daily U.S. users from 50 million to 100 million, primarily by encouraging its 200 million U.S. weekly users to engage with the platform more regularly, CEO Steve Huffman said.

The company is publicly addressing the long-standing “karma wall” problem, which often deters new users from participating, by implementing AI-powered spam protection to facilitate the entry of legitimate new users while deterring malicious actors, Huffman said.

Chief Operating Officer Jen Wong emphasized a new focus on “community success,” designed to simplify the process for both individual users and brands to create and expand communities on the platform. This includes streamlining the establishment of legitimate brand subreddits.

Despite the strategic pivot, Reddit reported strong financial performance, with its first-quarter ad revenue increasing by 74 percent. The platform also reached 126.8 million daily active users (DAU) during the quarter, according to the company’s earnings report.

Rich Greenfield, an analyst at OGS Media, noted that Reddit’s user engagement data shows a bimodal distribution, indicating that significant groups of users either engage once a week or every day. This pattern suggests a high level of commitment once users become deeply integrated into the platform.

The company’s leadership indicated that these platform changes are intended to foster a more welcoming environment, which they believe will naturally lead to increased engagement and sustainable growth.

Reddit’s commitment to prioritizing user experience and organic community development represents a significant strategic evolution for the social media giant, moving beyond traditional advertising metrics as its primary driver.
