Rank Math, a prominent SEO plugin for WordPress, temporarily suspended its AI Support Agent feature Tuesday after acknowledging unclear communication regarding the generation of credentials and user consent for website access.

The company stated the pause was necessary to redesign the feature’s workflow, ensuring explicit user permission and transparent explanations for credential requests before its planned reintroduction.

The AI Support Agent, intended as the initial phase of a broader deployment of AI agents capable of interacting with user sites, was designed to operate with read-only access to answer support questions within the website’s context.

Rank Math confirmed the feature generated WordPress Application Password credentials, which were meant to grant the AI agent read-only access, but without adequately clear user consent.

The company acknowledged that its process for obtaining permission and consent for the Support Agent was not explicit enough for users, prompting the temporary halt.

According to Rank Math, the generated passwords were secure, encrypted, and not stored on their servers. The company also stated these credentials inherited current WordPress user permissions and were strictly read-only.

The plugin developer plans to reintroduce the AI Support Agent feature once the necessary adjustments to clearly explain credential requests and secure explicit user permission are implemented.
