PARIS — A new study by Minddex reported that traditional organic position tracking methods are insufficient for measuring social media visibility within generative AI search results, highlighting significant discrepancies between AI citations and conventional search rankings.

The research, conducted in France, found that only 7.8 percent of YouTube URLs cited by Google AI Overviews also appeared in organic search results for the same query, contrasting sharply with Reddit URLs, where 77.8 percent of AI citations also ranked organically.

Minddex, in collaboration with Kortaix, analyzed 151,718 responses in France between August 27 and September 25, 2026, for its “GEO Social 2026” study.

Thibaut Fitoussi, an analyst at Minddex, stated that the findings underscore a critical gap in current digital marketing strategies, as established SEO tools like BrightEdge, Semrush, Ahrefs, and SE Ranking primarily focus on organic rankings.

The study revealed that 65.0 percent of Google AI Overviews responses cited at least one social content piece, a much higher rate compared to ChatGPT, which cited social content in only 3.5 percent of its responses.

Specific content formats were predominantly favored by AI Overviews. For instance, 93.0 percent of Instagram citations pointed to Reels, while 86.2 percent of YouTube citations directed users to long-form videos.

Discussion threads accounted for 99.5 percent of Reddit citations within the AI Overviews, according to the report.

YouTube emerged as the leading social platform in AI citations across all analyzed engines, appearing in 20.65 percent of cited responses. Facebook followed with 8.58 percent, then Reddit at 4.47 percent, and Instagram at 4.21 percent.

Minddex recommended that marketers and analysts shift their focus to directly observing citations within each generative AI engine, using a consistent panel of prompts to accurately gauge social visibility.

The firm emphasized that relying solely on organic position tracking would lead to a significant underestimation of social media’s impact on visibility in AI-powered search.
